Pirates Hold off Spartans, 73-70, in MEAC Quarterfinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a furious second-half rally, No. 4 seeded Norfolk State missed two late 3-pointers that would have tied the game, sealing No. 5 Hampton’s 73-70 win in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Spartans end their season at 11-19. The Pirates (14-17) advance to a Friday semifinal against No. 1 Morgan State.

Holston to Run in NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State first-year sophomore Sean Holston (Springfield, Va.) has qualified and been selected to participate in the men’s 200 meters on Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas.

NSU-Fairleigh Dickinson Baseball Dates Changed

NORFOLK, Va. - Due to the rain storms expected to affect the Hampton Roads region this weekend, dates for the baseball series between Fairleigh Dickinson and Norfolk State at NSU's Marty L. Miller Field have been changed.

The teams will now play doubleheaders on Sunday and Monday. The first game begins at 1 p.m. both days. There will not be any games on Saturday.

Joyce, Hairston Lead Offensive Explosion as Spartans Sweep NCCU

DURHAM, N.C. – Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) and Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) both homered twice and drove in five runs over the course of Norfolk State’s 14-2, 18-6 doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central on Wednesday afternoon at the Durham Athletic Park.

The Spartans (6-5-1) pounded out 38 hits in the two seven-inning games, 18 of which went for extra bases. Hairston did the most damage, going 7-for-10 with four doubles, two homers and the five RBI.

NSU Softball Drops Doubleheader at Virginia, 9-1, 3-2
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team dropped a pair of games at the University of Virginia on Wednesday, falling 9-1 in five innings and 3-2 to the Cavaliers at The Park.

In game 1, NSU (2-11) got on the board first in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.). Virginia (10-9) tied things up in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run by Nicole Koren.

Women’s Tennis Drops Match to Pittsburgh, 7-0
NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women’s tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the University of Pittsburgh on Wednesday at the NSU Tennis Complex.

Pittsburgh got off to a fast start and won the doubles point before taking all the singles matches in straight sets.

Bolden, Isaac Lead No. 6 Bethune-Cookman Over No. 11 Norfolk State, 76-66
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sarah Bolden scored a game-high 21 points off the bench, while teammate Jalisa Isaac added 17 points as No. 6 Bethune-Cookman defeated No. 11 Norfolk State in the opening round of the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
