NORFOLK, Va. – The 2009 Norfolk State Baseball Alumni Weekend, held Sept. 4-6, was a smashing success. From Friday's golf outing to Saturday's football game to Sunday's alumni baseball game, NSU was able to raise funding for the baseball program while providing former Spartan baseball players with the chance to reconnect and fellowship.
The baseball scholarship golf tournament on Friday, Sept. 4 at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth featured 125 golfers. The event raised $14,500 for the program. The tournament sponsor was Electronic Systems, Inc. Other major corporate sponsors where Te'chnico Corp., BAE Systems, MF&B Marine, LLC and Coastal Prosthetics and Orthotics.
“On behalf of the NSU athletics department and the baseball booster club, I would like to thank all of the corporations and individuals who gave so graciously to make our first golf tournament a success,” Spartan head baseball Claudell Clark said. “The tournament gave our program great exposure to the surrounding community and should immediately help to boost our fan base.”
Many of the baseball alumni also enjoyed the NSU-Virginia State football game on Saturday, Sept. 5 and stuck around to participate in the annual baseball alumni game on Sunday, Sept. 6. Twenty-five former Spartans took part in the game, which included home runs by current assistant coach A.J. Corbin ('04) and former graduate assistant coach Jose Torres ('07). Former Spartan hurlers Antione Alston ('05), Andy Renshaw ('04) and De'Mece Williams ('07) were among the pitchers who performed well.
“The funds raised over the course of the weekend's events will help to significantly enhance the baseball program for the 2009-2010 season,” Clark said. “We look forward to continuing this popular event each year.”
