UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Norfolk State women's track and field team got a first-place finish from its 4x400 meter relay team, whose members also fared well in their individuals events as the Spartans competed over the weekend at the Penn State National.
The quartet of
Nickheila John,
Chazmin Fullwood,
Martha Bissah and
Jada Key not only won its event, but also clocked a season-best for the Spartans. The winning time of 3 minutes, 49.28 seconds also ranks as the third-fastest in the MEAC this season.
Each of the four members of the 4x400 relay team also showed well in their respective individual races. John placed third in the invitational section of the 400 meters, running a season-best time of 56.35 seconds. That is the fourth-best time in the conference this year in addition to being John's best indoor quarter-mile mark in her two seasons with NSU.
Key, a freshman, posted her best time of the year in the second section of the 400 meters. She was eighth in 58.53. Fullwood, meanwhile, competed in the 500 meters and took sixth place in a tight race, posting a time of 1:16.50.
Bissah, meanwhile, lowered her MEAC-best 800m time. Running in the invitational section of the 800, the freshman took fifth in 2:09.42, some three seconds better than her previous MEAC-leading time from the Liberty meet last weekend.
Elsewhere, sophomore
Tyrika Lee ran a season-best time of 25.03 seconds to finish second in the 200 meters. In addition, junior
Candice Higgins registered her best time of the indoor season in the 800 meters. Her 2:13.94 earned her fifth place in the second section of the 800 and ranks as the third-fastest in the MEAC this season.
The Spartans compete next weekend at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by CNU in Newport News.
