GREENVILLE, N.C. – In their final tuneup before the MEAC Cross Country Championship in two weeks, three Spartans broke the 25:00 mark to lead the Norfolk State men's cross country team to a third-place finish on Friday night at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational at Lake Kristi.
In a field featuring 10 teams, NSU finished with 57 points, trailing only Duke (49) and East Carolina (50).
Junior
Anteneh Girma led the way for the Spartans for the third time in the team's five meets, clocking an 8K personal record of 24 minutes, 39.05 seconds. He placed fifth overall. Girma was one of three Spartans to place in the top 10. Senior
Ronald Korir finished eighth in a season-best time of 24:43.67, while sophomore
Felix Kiprotich was ninth in a PR of 24:51.39.
Sophomore
Bill Kemboi also turned in a season-best 8K time of 25:14.95, good for 20th place. Sophomore
Festus Bett rounded out the top five for NSU with a time of 25:52.95. He finished 30th, while junior
Tomas Fantaye was close behind in 32nd with a time of 25:58.40.
The Spartans are off next week before competing in the 2017 MEAC Championships in Smyrna, Del. on Oct. 28.
