EARLYSVILLE, Va. – Sophomore
Martha Bissah recorded a second-place individual finish as the Norfolk State women's cross country team opened its 2017 season Saturday morning in the University of Virginia Duals.
Bissah clocked a time of 14 minutes, 20 seconds on the 4,000-meter course to pace the Spartans. She just missed out on winning the individual title, finishing one second behind U.Va.'s Francis Schmiede. U.Va., Liberty and James Madison rounded out the four-team field, with individual finishes compared among the four teams in a dual-meet format. NSU was 0-3 in the duals standings.
Candice Higgins was the Spartans' next-highest finisher. She placed 24th overall in 16:15.
Carolyne Samoei was 25th in 16:18,
Linei Woodson finished 29th in 16:48,
Ashah Koech took 32nd in 17:24 and
Nelly Jerop rounded out the Spartans' top five in 33rd with a time of 18:58.
The Spartans are off next week before competing in the William & Mary Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15.
