Spartans Win 4th in a Row, Top Longwood 9-2

6 Spartans Register 2+ Hits

NORFOLK, Va. – First baseman Aaron Robinson and outfielder Tony Leite drove in three runs apiece and were two of six Spartans with multiple hits in Norfolk State's 9-2 non-conference win over Longwood on Tuesday at Marty L. Miller Field.

Shortstop Mikey Delgado (3-for-5) had a career-high three hits and five other players had two hits each for NSU (17-23), which outhit the Lancers (14-29) 13-5 to win for the second time in the last three meetings between the teams. Robinson, Leite and Alsander Womack all went 2-for-4, while Justin Hayes and Ismael Herrera both finished 2-for-5 as NSU ran its winning streak to four straight.

Freshman right hander Seth Hockett picked up his second win of the season in just his third start of the campaign. The side-armer, who has appeared 16 times out of the bullpen, went a career-high five innings and matched his season best with five strikeouts, allowing just four hits and two runs. Fellow rookie Joey Santos pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit and no runs to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Hayes set the tone early for the Spartans. He reached on an infield single, stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Robinson to give the Spartans a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first. Longwood tied it up on Grant Keller's squeeze bunt in the top of the third, but the Spartans answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Hayes again got the rally started, reaching on a bunt single and stealing second for his team-leading 24th steal of the season. Womack and Robinson followed with RBI doubles, and one batter later, Leite hit one of his own to make it 4-1. Then with two outs, Syeed Mahdi and Leite executed a double steal of second base and home, respectively, to cap the third-inning rally.

Longwood managed a run in Justin Mitchell's RBI double in the fifth, but Santos closed the door after that, holding the Lancers off the board in the sixth through ninth innings. The NSU offense provided four runs of insurance, including three runs thanks to five hits in the seventh inning. Robinson hit his second RBI double of the day, Leite singled in another run and later scored on a Longwood error.

Leite tacked on a sacrifice fly in the eighth to close the scoring.

In addition to their 13 hits, the Spartans also swiped a season-high eight bases. Hayes, Leite and Womack had two steals apiece, while Mahdi and Herrera had one each. Womack scored three runs, while Hayes, Robinson and Leite all scored twice.

The Spartans remain at home as they close out the MEAC portion of their schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Coppin State. Saturday's doubleheader has been pushed back to a 2 p.m. start due to NSU's graduation activities, while Sunday's Senior Day home finale starts at noon.
