Early Homers Lift No. 10 East Carolina Past Spartans

GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 10 ranked East Carolina hit three home runs in the first three innings to lift the Pirates to a 9-1 win over Norfolk State on Tuesday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Tony Leite had two hits and a pair of stolen bases and Alejandro Pelaez hit an RBI single for the Spartans (17-26), who were playing their first ranked opponent since facing then-No. 10 Virginia in 2009.

NSU had runners on base in the first four innings, but couldn't capitalize against the highly-regarded Pirates (34-12). A double play in the first stalled one scoring chance and the Spartans had runners caught stealing in the second and third innings.

ECU, meanwhile, got a home run by Bryant Packard to lead off the bottom of the first and didn't look back. Brady Lloyd reached on an error and scored on Turner Brown's sacrifice bunt to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

The big blow was a three-run third, with all ECU runs scoring via the home run. Dwanya Williams-Sutton led off the frame with a solo homer and Spencer Brickhouse followed with a double. Lloyd then cleared the bases with a two-out, two-run homer to make it 5-0.

Williams-Sutton added an RBI double in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Spartan pitching held the Pirates in the middle innings. Trey Hanchey, who entered in the third inning, pitched a scoreless fifth before left-handed relievers Joey Santos and Jalen Rudolph pitched scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh, respectively. Hanchey recorded four of the Spartans' five strikeouts in his three innings of work.

The Pirates tacked on three more runs in the eighth against the Spartan bullpen.

The Spartans scored their lone run in the ninth. Stephen Baughan reached on an error and later scored on Pelaez's pinch-hit RBI single.

Tyler Morgan (0-3) took the loss for NSU, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit in two innings of work. Jake Kuchmaner (2-0) earned the win, tossing four scoreless innings for the Pirates.

The Spartans conclude their regular-season slate with a three-game series at Jackson State on Thursday and Friday.
