Former Spartan player Larry Vickers is in his second season as an assistant men’s basketball at NSU. During his first season on staff, Vickers helped the Spartans advance to the MEAC Tournament championship game for the first time in program history.
Vickers, a four-year letterwinner at NSU from 2004-08, works with the Spartans’ post players. He also recruits, scouts opponents and handles administrative tasks. His main areas of responsibility in recruiting are North Carolina and Virginia, with an emphasis on the surrounding Hampton Roads region.
The 6-9 Vickers walked onto the Spartans’ team during the 2004-05 season. He quickly earned playing time and was a noted defensive player during his career.
Vickers played in 108 games over his four years. He started all 31 games as a senior in 2007-08 and averaged career highs in points (4.6), rebounds (5.7) and field goal percentage (.482). He ranked fourth in the MEAC in blocks last season (1.5 average) and swatted 102 in his career. He was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on one occasion as a senior.
A two-time member of the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, Vickers was named the Spartans’ Most Improved Player as a sophomore in 2005-06.
Vickers earned his bachelor’s degree in electronic technology in 2007. He has taken courses toward his master’s in urban education at NSU. He graduated from Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach.
