ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team will take part in the Comcast Lobo Shootout hosted by the University of New Mexico which starts tonight at 7 p.m. EST. The Spartans will take on UNM at 9 p.m. EST. The two-day affair also features Southern University and Towson.
NSU fell to 1-3 on the season with 68-39 loss to North Carolina A&T on Saturday. The Spartans had a dismal outing, shooting just 25.5 percent (13-of-51) from the field and missing all 10 of their 3-point attempts. NSU was led by senior forward Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) who scored 16 points and had nine rebounds in a career-high 40 minutes. Freshman forward Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) contributed seven points and seven rebounds for the Spartans, who had almost as many turnovers as points (38 turnovers, 39 points).
New Mexico (5-2) dropped a 58-42 decision at New Mexico State on Sunday. Amy Beggin's 16 points led the Lobos' effort, but the team was 11-of-53 (20.8 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from 3-point range. New Mexico has fared well in home games so far, as all five wins this season have come at The Pit. UNM went 13-2 at home in 2006-07 and won its last six home Mountain West conference games. Dionne Marsh leads the Lobos in scoring with 13.6 points per game with Beggin following closely with 13.1 points per game. Brandi Kimble is averaging a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game.
The Southern Jaguars are off to a 0-4 start, but have played some tough opponents, including Ohio State, Nevada, and UCLA. The Jaguars lost 79-52 to UCLA on Sunday in the John Ascuaga's Nugget Classic consolation game. Ashley Augerson had a career-high 15 points, five rebounds and two steals. Through four games, the Jaguars are led by Indi Johnson who is averaging 12.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
Towson improved to 3-5 after a 74-68 win at Rider on Sunday. Shanae Baker-Brice paces the team with 13.0 points per game, while Holly Mahan leads the team with 8.6 rebounds per game. The Tigers defeated NSU 76-55 on Nov. 16, and were led by Kandace Davis, who had 12 points and nine rebounds.
