Spartans Fall Short Against Southern in 70-57 Loss

Several Spartans Shine in Losing Effort

Ashley Compton (Houston, Tex.) scored a career-high 13 points off the bench and led three Norfolk State players in double figures, but NSU could not overcome a late second-half rally by Southern as the Jaguars defeated NSU 70-57on Saturday evening at The Pit in the consolation game of the Comcast Lobo Shootout.

With the win, Southern improves to 1-5 on the season. NSU falls to 1-5.

Indi Johnson scored 11 of her 15 points in the last 9:18 of the game. Johnson's three-point play with 6:40 left in the game gave Southern a six-point advantage, 50-44. Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) connected on the second of two free throws to cut the deficit to eight, 53-45, but the Jaguar offense came alive, scoring 17 points in the final five minutes.

The Spartans played well in the first half despite a slow start to the game. Mo'Nique Redhead (Toronto, Ontario) hit the first 3-pointer of her career with 11:08 left in the half to cut Southern's lead to three, 10-7. Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.) hit a pair of free throws with 43 seconds left in the opening period to bring the score to 30-27 at the half.

For Southern, Freda Allen had a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds and Deidra Jackson contributed 11 points.

Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) tied her career-high with 12 points and added six rebounds and two assists for NSU. Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) also had a career night, posting personal bests of 10 points and three assists. Defensively, Gadsden led the Spartan effort, tallying 14 rebounds, a season-high eight blocks, and four steals. Walker also grabbed 10 boards.

The Spartans have nine days off before they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to play in the University of North Florida Holiday Classic. NSU will play host UNF on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. and Savannah State on Dec. 18 at 5 p.m.
