FAIRFAX, Va. — # Philemon Kimutai # (Eldoret, Kenya) set a school record in the 3,000 meters, and the Norfolk State sprinters and hurdlers compiled four first-place finishes on Saturday as the Spartans opened their 2009-10 indoor season at the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason.
Kimutai, the sophomore in his first track meet at NSU after transferring from Wyoming, ran a time of 8 minutes, 30 seconds to take fourth place in the 3,000.
Junior Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) started a string of first-place finishes for the Spartans by taking the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.07 seconds. Sophomore Quinten Walker (Hampton, Va.) followed suit with a victory in the 60 meters (6.83), and junior Thomas Speller (Chesapeake, Va.) continued the flurry of first-place finished by winning the 200 meters (22.03), followed closely by Walker (22.08). Speller was also fourth place in the 60 meters (6.93).
NSU's final first-place finish of the day came via the 4x400 meter relay team. The quartet of Speller, Tyrell Moon (Philadelphia, Pa.), Sean Holston (Springfield, Va.) and Kenneth Smith (Newport News, Va.) cruised to a winning time of 3:17.21.
The Spartans' field athletes racked up a pair of second-place finishes. Senior Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas) was runner-up in the pole vault (4.40 meters) and sophomore Darris Shelton (Hampton, Va.) was second with a personal-best 15.08 meters in the triple jump. Shelton was the high collegiate finisher in the triple jump, placing second behind an unattached athlete.
The Spartans return to the track next weekend at the University of Maryland Invitational.
