PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Norfolk State men's cross country extended its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference dominance, winning its third straight conference championship and 10th in the last 11 years on Saturday morning on the campus of Maryland Eastern Shore.
The Spartan men tallied 34 points, well ahead of second-place UMES (85).
Each of the top five finishers for the NSU men finished in the top 15, earning All-MEAC honors. They were led by sophomore Vincent Rono (Bomet, Kenya), who ran a personal-best 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 40.90 seconds to finish second overall. Junior Amos Kipkosgei (Eldoret, Kenya) was third in a PR of 24:58.90, and Josef Tessema (Springfield, Va.) placed fourth in 25:00.60.
Rounding out the Spartans' top five and All-MEAC contingent were Philemon Kimutai (Eldoret, Kenya) in 12th place (26:06.20) and Kameron George (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 13th in 26:13.40.
Though they did not factor into the team score, Vincent Brown (Peachtree City, Ga.), Jonathan Griffin (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Anthony Tillman (Okinawa, Japan) all ran personal-best times for the Spartans.
“We did what we set out to do,” said NSU head men's coach Kenneth Giles, who was named the MEAC Outstanding Men's Cross Country Coach for the 10th time. “For us to have six of our eight guys run PR's and we haven't raced in three weeks, that's a tribute to how hard we trained. Now, we turn our focus to getting ready for regionals.”
The Spartan men participate in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 13 in Louisville, Ky.
