Mitchell Leads Maine Past Spartans, 74-54

– Terrance Mitchell scored a game-high 22 points and hit five 3-pointers off the bench to lead host Maine to a 74-54 victory over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gym.

Kyle O'Quinn had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the year and fourth in a row for the Spartans (1-7), who lost their sixth straight game.

Maine (4-5) shot 54 percent from the floor for the game, connecting on 27-of-50 field goal attempts. The Black Bears, meanwhile, held the Spartans to 34.6 percent shooting (18-of-52).

Maine outscored NSU 19-7 over the final 9:38 of the first half to extend their lead from two points (19-17) to 14 (38-24) heading into the half. Mitchell scored the final five points of the half for Maine.

The Spartans, who never led, shot just 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the floor in the second half and were not able to cut into their halftime deficit. Mitchell added 12 points after halftime and finished the day 7-of-9 from the floor, 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Gerald McLemore chipped in with 12 points on four 3-point field goals, and Murphy Burnatowski added nine points for the Black Bears.

O'Quinn and freshman Pendarvis Williams led NSU with 11 points apiece. Williams added four rebounds and a career-high six assists while starting for Aleek Pauline, who missed the game due to illness. Leading scorer Rob Hampton contributed 10 points but was just 1-of-8 from the floor.

The Spartans are off until next Monday, Dec. 20, when they visit the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., for their first-ever game against the Cavaliers.
