RICHMOND, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team fell in a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the VCU 4-1 Invitational at Virginia Commonwealth's Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The Spartans lost by a 5-0 score to Penn earlier in the day before falling to UNC Wilmington by the same margin. Each match at the invitational consisted of one doubles match and four singles matches for a total of five points.
Against the Quakers, sophomore
Rebecca Graff dropped her match at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to Daniela DePaoli. Junior
Naeemah Brooks fell to Stephanie Do, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. In the other singles matches, freshman
Gabriella Jonsson lost to No. 14 Connie Hsu at No. 1 singles and junior
Ashley Foster fell to Emma Whitfield at No. 4 singles. Both players lost by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
In the doubles match, senior
Chenge Tsapayi and freshman
Maryna Kariuk came up short against Alexa Ely and Jaime Yapp-Shing, 6-0, 6-0.
The Spartans then competed against UNC Wilmington right after their match with Penn. Senior
Jennifer Astbury, at No. 1 singles, lost to Christina Lee, 6-1, 6-0. Brooks competed against Christina Riley at No. 2 singles, Tsapayi faced Kelly Cameron at No. 3, and Foster went up against Lindsay Leblang at the No. 4 slot. Each player lost by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
In the doubles match, Graff and Jonsson also fell by a 6-0, 6-0 score to Angie Sekely and Olga Blank.
NSU will face host Virginia Commonwealth Sunday at noon to wrap up the tournament.
