WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team competed this weekend at the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and recorded a trio of wins.
Sophomores Laura Gutierrez and Mafalda Lhorca competed in the Margie Waters Flight of the singles matches. Gutierrez suffered a 6-3, 7-6 , loss to William & Mary's Jackie Lee before defeating Anastasija Trubica of Kansas in the consolation round. Gutierrez fell to James Madison's Ruxandra Andriescu, 6-1, 6-2. Lhorca loss to Karlyn Timko of Marshall 6-0, 6-1. Lhorca was also defeated by James Madison's Ruxandra Andriescu, 6-0, 6-3.
Three NSU players competed in the Marion Gengler Flight of the singles bracket including sophomore Kia Batiste, junior Maryna Kariuk, and senior Rebecca Graff. Batiste fell to Sarah Henderson of Penn State, 6-1, 6-2, before defeating her teammate, Kariuk, 6-0, 6-1. Batiste then loss to Old Dominion's Faith Atiso, 6-0, 6-1. Kariuk fell to James Madison's Megan Douglass, 6-1, 6-1. Graff suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Victoria Khanevskaya of Kansas. She also loss to Atiso, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Andrea Macchiavello fell to James Madison's Taylor Pinchoff 6-2, 6-1, in the Kristine Kurth singles bracket. She also suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to William & Mary's Nina Vulovich and a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Penn's Emma Whitfield in the consolation matches.
In the Michelle O Flight of the doubles bracket Gutierrez and Kariuk paired up and were defeated by Nina Vulovich and Jackie Lee of William & Mary, 8-0. In the consolation matches they also loss suffered an 8-2 loss to Old Dominion's Faith Atiso and Nika Khmolovska, and were defeated by teammates Macchiavello and Lhorca, 8-2. Macchiavello and Lhorca competed together and suffered an 8-2 loss to Marshall's Kai Broomfield and Ellie Ball. They fell to Katherine Bulling and Cara Wirth of James Madison, 9-7, before defeating teammates Gutierrez and Kariuk, 8-2.
The Spartans return to action on Oct. 18-22 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA Regional.
