Rodriguez Voted Preseason All-MEAC; Spartans Picked 2nd in South

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State redshirt junior bowler Alexa Rodriguez was named to the Preseason All-MEAC Team on Thursday when the conference office announced its preseason bowling honors for 2017-18.
In addition, NSU was picked to finish second in the Southern Division in voting done by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
Rodriguez garnered preseason all-conference accolades for the second year in a row. She has already been named postseason All-MEAC twice in her career, a second-team nod during her freshman year and first-team all-conference last year as a sophomore.
A native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez averaged 194.2 last year in traditional games, the fifth-best average in school history and just off the 194.6 she posted as a freshman. Rodriguez joined Thea Aspiras as the only two NSU bowlers to earn first-team all-conference.
The Norfolk State program, meanwhile, received five first-place votes and 57 points to finish second behind North Carolina A&T (13 first-place votes, 67 points) in the South Division. Florida A&M (29 points) and Bethune-Cookman (27) rounded out the standings.
Maryland Eastern Shore just edged out Delaware State for first in the North. The Hawks garnered nine first-place votes and 79 points, compared to six and 68, respectively, for DSU. Howard, Morgan State and Coppin State, in that order, rounded out the standings.
Joining Rodriguez on the Preseason All-MEAC Team were DSU's Elizabeth Burkholder, Chelsey Merklinger and Alexis Neuer and Maryland Eastern Shore's Jacqueline Rhoda. Preseason Bowler of the Year also went to Rhoda.
NSU begins its season on Oct. 21-22 with the Hampton Roads Invitational hosted by the Spartans at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.
