Carter, Kirby Earn VaSID All-State Honors

VaSID All-State Football Team

Norfolk State freshman quarterback Juwan Carter was named the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Offensive Rookie of the Year, while sophomore offensive lineman Kenneth Kirby was voted to the all-state second team as the organization announced its University Division honors for the 2017 season on Friday.

The VaSID University Division All-State Football Team honors the top players from the Commonwealth of Virginia who play at Division I institutions on either the FBS or FCS levels.

Carter started eight games this past fall and saw action in all 11 contests. He passed for 1,827 yards and threw 13 touchdown passes against just six interceptions. Carter also ran for two more touchdowns. All 15 of the touchdowns he accounted for came in NSU's eight MEAC games, and the rookie signal-caller ranked fourth among conference quarterbacks in passing in MEAC-only contests (198.6 ypg).

Kirby was a third-team All-MEAC selection after starting all 11 games for the Spartans at left tackle for the second consecutive year. With Kirby protecting the blind side for NSU's quarterbacks, the Spartans' offensive line allowed 13 fewer sacks this past year over the 2016 season.

Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauletta was named the state's Offensive Player of the Year, while Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser was selected Defensive Player of the Year. James Madison's Mike Houston was voted Coach of the Year, and U.Va. defensive back Brenton Nelson was selected Defensive Rookie of the Year.
