NORFOLK, Va. – Four Norfolk State baseball players were voted to the All-MEAC teams and head coach
Keith Shumate was tabbed Coach of the Year as the conference announced its postseason awards on Tuesday.
Senior outfielder
Justin Hayes and sophomore designated hitter
Alsander Womack were named to the All-MEAC first team, while junior first baseman
Stephen Baughan and junior outfielder
Caleb Ward were selected to the second team in voting by league head coaches and sports information directors.
Hayes earned first-team All-MEAC honors for the second year in a row. One of the conference's premier leadoff men, Hayes has stolen an NSU Division I-era record 30 bases this season, which ranks him 15th in the nation. He is also tied for third in the MEAC in triples (four), tied for fourth in runs (38) and tied for ninth in hits (55). For the year, he is batting .306 with seven doubles, four triples, one home run and 22 runs batted in.
Womack, who has served as DH for much of the season before easing back into his customary role at second base, picks up his first career All-MEAC postseason award. He finished the regular season second in the MEAC in batting average, at .389, which ranks 25th nationally. A two-time MEAC Player of the Week, Womack has 10 doubles, one triple, two homers, 30 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He also ranks second in the MEAC in on-base percentage (.459) and fourth in slugging (.510).
Baughan continues to be one of the conference's most productive middle-of-the-order hitters. He leads the MEAC with 19 doubles and ranks tied for fourth with five home runs. His .546 slugging percentage is second-best among conference players, while he is also fifth in total bases (89) and sixth in triples (three). Baughan, who ranks ninth in the nation in doubles per game, is also hitting .301 with 25 RBIs entering this week's MEAC tournament.
Ward has supplied plenty of offense for NSU in his first year with the team. A transfer from the University of Richmond, Ward is batting .279 with 12 doubles, two triples, three homers and a team-high 39 RBIs, which ranks fourth in the MEAC. Ward is second on the team with 33 runs scored and is the lone Spartan to start all 46 games to date. He was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Team last week.
In his second year as head coach, Shumate led the Spartans to their fourth MEAC Northern Division title in five seasons. The Spartans won their last five divisional series of the year to finish atop the standings. After starting the season 0-10, NSU went 22-14 the rest of the way. This is Shumate's second time winning the MEAC's top coaching honor, and first since 2002 when he led North Carolina A&T.
North Carolina Central won two of the conference's top honors, as a shortstop Corey Joyce was voted Player of the Year and pitcher Ryan Miller was voted Rookie of the Year. Delaware State's Garrett Lawson was selected Pitcher of the Year.
The Spartans get a first-round MEAC tournament bye and open play in the double-elimination championship this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between Florida A&M and Delaware State. All games will be played at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Florida.
