Juan Serrano joins the Spartan coaching staff this season as a student assistant. He will help with hitting and infield instruction as well as practice preparation.
Serrano had one of the finest careers of any Spartan in the Division I era, earning three All-MEAC first-team selections during his four years at NSU (2004-07). He became the school’s first-ever Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and MEAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman second baseman in 2004, batting .352 with three homers and 39 RBI en route to his first All-MEAC first-team honor.
Serrano, who played third base during his final three seasons, was third in the MEAC in batting with a .370 average as a sophomore, earning All-MEAC first-team accolades for the second straight year. An injury slowed his junior campaign in 2006, but he bounced back with another All-MEAC season as a senior in 2007. Serrano tied for seventh in the MEAC in batting (.362) and was fourth in slugging percentage (.556) after leading the team with six home runs in his final year in green and gold.
For his career, Serrano ranks in the top 10 in school history in doubles (45, tied for second), hits (215, fourth), at-bats (635, fourth), runs batted in (135, fifth), games played (172, seventh) and total bases (301, eighth).
After his NSU career, Serrano played parts of two seasons with the St. George (Utah) Roadrunners in the independent Golden Baseball League. He had 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 58 games as a rookie in 2008. In 2009, he batted .290 with eight doubles and two home runs in 34 games.
A native of Naugatuck, Conn., Serrano is completing his degree in interdisciplinary studies this year.
