Athletes of the Week
Football
Recorded 10 catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the 21-16 win over Delaware State...had eight catches for 86 yards and both of his touchdowns in the decisive fourth-quarter rally...scored the winning TD with 49 seconds remaining on a 39-yard catch-and-run where he broke two tackles before finding the end zone...it was his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season.
Women's Volleyball
Posted 50 assists in NSU's two matches last week...had six kills, no errors and hit .429 in the loss to Bethune-Cookman...added 27 assists in the loss to Florida A&M...had five digs in each match.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Whitney Johnson had a match-high 11 kills and hit .733 to help the Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Norfolk State in quarterfinals of the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.  The Lady Hawks won the match 25-14, 25-11, 25-18.

The Lady Hawks dominated the match by jumping out to early leads in each set. The closest NSU (9-22) could get was 25-18 in the third set, but the damage had already been done.

11.19 | Women's Volleyball

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State sophomore setter Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) was named to the 2009 All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference volleyball second team as voted on by the conference head coaches and sports information directors the league announced on Thursday.

Kessner is the first Spartan to earn All-MEAC honors under third-year head coach Jennifer Fry.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State volleyball team earned the fourth seed in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference southern division and will take part in the conference tournament for the third consecutive year. The 2009 MEAC Tournament runs from Friday, Nov. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 22 and will be held at the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Jovana Blazeksi had a match-high 18 kills, while teammate Maria Gomez tallied 11 kills as the Florida A&M volleyball team handed Norfolk State a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center. FAMU won the match 28-26, 25-18, 25-15.

The Lady Rattlers improved to 14-8 on the season and 8-0 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 8-21 overall and wrapped up MEAC play with a 3-5 record.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Chelle Ticeson had a match-high 14 kills and hit .520 with two digs as the Bethune-Cookman volleyball team defeated NSU 3-0 on Friday night at Moore Gymnasium. BCU (12-14, 6-4 MEAC) won the match 25-21, 25-18, 25-20.

NSU (8-20, 3-4 MEAC) played a tough match and kept it very close in the first and third sets, but the Lady Wildcats were able to outlast the Spartans.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State’s volleyball match at Hampton University, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight, has been postponed due to the inclement weather in the Hampton Roads area.

The match has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in Holland Hall.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State Senior Day honoree Angie Clewis (Lancaster, Texas) had a match-high 11 kills in the Spartans’ 3-1 win over Winston-Salem State on Sunday afternoon at Echols Hall. NSU (8-19) took the match 25-17, 17-25, 25-20, 25-14.

In the first set, WSSU (4-32) scored the first two points, but the Spartans tied things up on a kill by Chynna Blaker (Goodrich, Mich.).
