NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State University athletics director Marty L. Miller announced Wednesday that head softball coach Kary Kankey will be reassigned within the department, effective May 12, 2010. Her reassignment is scheduled to run through October 2010.
Kankey compiled a 106-144 record five seasons leading the Spartans. Her teams were 33-31 in MEAC play and she led NSU to the championship of the MEAC Tournament in 2008. This season, the Spartans went 14-28 overall and 3-9 in the MEAC and failed to qualify for the conference tournament.
Miller also announced that former NSU assistant Heidi Cavallo will serve as the Spartans' interim head coach for the 2011 season.
Cavallo came to NSU after serving as the head girls softball coach at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, Va. from 2006-2008. She also served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Virginia Wesleyan College, during the 2002-2004 and 2006-2007 seasons.
Cavallo had a stellar pitching career at VWC from 1998-2001. Cavallo was named VWC's Player and Pitcher of the Year as a freshman in 1998 and made the all-state team in 1998 and 1999. She was a four-time ODAC all-conference pick and was the ODAC Most Valuable Player in 1998.
Cavallo earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from VWC in 2001.
