NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Arielle Knafel of the Norfolk State volleyball team earned Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week accolades Monday, the second straight week an NSU player garnered the honor.
A 5-9 outside hitter out of Greenwood, Ind., Knafel averaged 2.20 kills, 3.20 digs and 0.73 service aces per set in four matches last week. She had her best match against Radford Friday in the Radford Tournament, posting 14 kills on a .379 attack percentage with nine digs.
Earlier in the week, Knafel had 12 kills, 16 digs and eight service aces in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Hampton Tuesday night. The eight service aces was the most by a MEAC player since Sept. 20, 2008, when Bethune-Cookman's Shakhea Moore-Hagins had eight at Savannah State.
Knafel also added five assists and three blocks for the week. Knafel leads the team with 2.97 kills and 0.52 service aces per set and is second with 3.32 digs.
Freshman libero Noelle Eagles won Rookie of the Week honors last Monday, the first week the awards were handed out for 2010.
The Spartans will head to the Coastal Carolina Classic next weekend, beginning Friday with USC Upstate at 4 p.m.
