3-Run 8th Lifts Villanova Past NSU 4-2 in Season Opener

HTML Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. –
Villanova scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally for a 4-2 win over Norfolk State in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

NSU (0-1) held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but could not close out the Wildcats (1-0), who outhit the Spartans 9-7. NSU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on Syeed Mahdi's sacrifice fly. His RBI scored Stephen Baughan, who led off the inning with his second single of the day and advanced on the first career base hit by Alsander Womack.

The Wildcats tied it up in the fifth. David Gulati reached second base on a dropped fly ball by the Spartans and scored on a single off the bat of Brandon Campos.

That would be the only run Villanova could muster off NSU starter Chase Anderson. The junior right hander worked six innings and allowed five hits and one unearned run while striking out seven batters. He took a no-decision.

The Spartans regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Ismael Herrera singled with one out and scored on a two-out, hit-and-run double by senior first baseman Tony Leite to give the Spartans a 2-1 edge.

But the Wildcats struck for three runs off the Spartan bullpen in the eighth. With one out, Tyler Bruno coaxed a walk and Ryan Toohers was hit with a pitch by reliever Joey Santos. John Heilenbach singled off reliever Jarret Henderson to tie the game. Timothy Lilly hit a go-ahead RBI single and Pat O'Neill tacked on another run-scoring hit to account for the final margin.

Tyler Arella (1-0) pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth and Ryan Pfutzenreuter a scoreless ninth for the save. Arella was credited with the win, working 2.1 innings in relief of starter Jonathan Rosero.

Santos (0-1) was charged with the loss despite not allowing a hit in one inning in relief.

Baughan went 2-for-4 to lead NSU. Five other Spartans had one hit apiece. Mahdi and Leite both went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Leite also stole two bases.

The teams are slated to play game two of their series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
