SALISBURY, Md. – Trey Hanchey picked up his first collegiate pitching win after firing six-plus innings of one-run ball and
Stephen Baughan homered for the second straight day as Norfolk State defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 6-2 on Sunday to complete a weekend sweep at Perdue Stadium.
Hanchey, a junior right hander in his first season with NSU, scattered five hits and four walks over six-plus innings. He allowed one earned run and struck out two batters. Baughan, the sophomore designated hitter, hit a two-run first-inning homer for his team-leading fifth round-tripper of the year, and the Spartans (16-23, 13-8 MEAC North) never trailed.
Alsander Womack, who went 2-for-4, hit a one-out single off MDES starter Evan Bertone and scored on Baughan's homer to left. Avery Tunnell answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to bring the Hawks (9-35, 5-16) within 2-1.
The Spartans gradually began to expand their lead thanks in part to some shaky MDES defense. NSU outfielder
Khie Simms walked to lead off the third, advanced to second on a failed pickoff and scored on another Hawk error to give NSU a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth,
Syeed Mahdi reached second on a one-out Hawk error. He stole third base – one of four Spartan steals on the day – before scoring on an RBI groundout by
Ismael Herrera, making it 4-1.
Hanchey left the game after hitting a pair of batters to start the seventh, but Spartan reliever
Seth Hockett worked out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve the lead.
NSU plated two more runs in the eighth.
Tony Leite singled to start the rally and Mahdi walked. Both runners were moved up by Herrera's sac bunt before
Mikey Delgado's squeeze bunt scored Leite. Simms then drove in Mahdi with a sacrifice fly.
The Hawks got a run back on an RBI single by Isaiah Chambers in the bottom of the eighth, but
Joey Santos struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the win and the sweep for the Spartans.
That made a winner out of Hanchey, who had been on the wrong side of some tough decisions of late. Sunday marked the fifth time in his last six starts in which he allowed three or fewer earned runs, but the Spartans were on the losing end of his last five starts.
Evan Bertone (1-6) took the loss for MDES after allowing four runs, two earned, in five innings.
Womack and Leite each went 2-for-4 for the Spartans. Tunnell and Chambers had two hits apiece for the Hawks.
NSU is home for its next four games, beginning with a 4 p.m. contest against Longwood on Tuesday.
