NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball trio of catcher
Tuli Iosefa, pitcher
Kirsten Greene and outfielder
Gabby Vaughan was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Team on Tuesday.
Â
Iosefa was voted to the all-state first team, while both Vaughan and Greene earned spots on the second team. It marked the most all-state honorees for the Spartan softball program since it claimed four in 2014.
Â
Iosefa joins Kylee Lopez, who was named all-state in both 2018 and '19, in giving the Spartans three all-state catchers in the last four years. Iosefa, a Virginia Beach native, was named first-team All-MEAC this year after leading the MEAC in RBI (36) and ranked second in home runs (8) and slugging (.641), and third in walks (17) and total bases (66). She batted .330 this year with six doubles and a team-leading .434 on-base percentage. She was named MEAC Player of the Week three times in addition to earning a MEAC All-Tournament Team nod.
Â
Similar to Iosefa, Vaughan gives NSU its third all-state outfielder in the last four years after
Shelby DesChamps earned the honor in both 2018 and '19. A Chesapeake, Virginia native, Vaughan was voted to the All-MEAC first team after making the switch from third base to outfield before the start of the season. She ranked third in the MEAC in home runs (5), fourth in total bases (60) and fifth in RBI (23) and slugging (.556). She batted .324 and had six doubles and two triples with a .387 on-base percentage.
Â
Greene becomes the first all-state pitcher for NSU since Jamie Schulle in 2014. Hailing from Hayes, Virginia, Greene was named to the All-MEAC second team after leading the MEAC in ERA (1.28) and opposing batting average (.151). A two-time MEAC Pitcher of the Week, she pitched in 23 games, all except one in relief, and went 2-2 with 40 strikeouts and just 24 hits allowed in 43.2 innings of work. She ranked in the top 20 in the nation in fewest hits per seven innings (3.85) and ERA.
Â
NSU went 20-19 overall this year, the fifth winning record in its Division I era, as well as 12-7 in the league for a second-place finish in the Northern Division. NSU's three all-state players were part of a six-player contingent that earned All-MEAC honors this season.
Â
James Madison, which advanced to the College World Series this year, swept the four major state awards. Kate Gordon and Odicci Alexander were named the Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Alissa Humphrey took home the Rookie of the Year award, while Loren Laporte won Coach of the Year.
