Welcome to the Student-Athlete Wellness Tab, a dedicated space for Norfolk State University student-athletes to access valuable resources that support mental health and overall well-being. Whether the athletes are navigating the pressures of competition, managing academic responsibilities, or looking to improve their mental wellness, this tab is here to guide you. 
 
Here, you’ll find a wide variety of resources, including TED Talks, informative videos, articles, and positive graphics designed to inspire and uplift you throughout your athletic journey. Additionally, you can stay updated on upcoming wellness events, workshops, and discussions tailored specifically to the needs of student-athletes on the Instagram page Mindofaspartan_

Counseling Services 
 
Located in the Gills Gymnasium Room 219, athletics mental health counseling provides a wide range of mental health support for students.  

Various evidence-based therapeutic techniques are utilized to engage students in exploring stressors, positive coping skills, and resources to address mental health concerns.  The student-athletes are offered various mental health support services including: 

  • Crisis intervention
  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Consultation
  • Psycho-educational outreach and programming

Athletic Training 
 
Norfolk State University has skilled, certified athletic trainers for every sports team to make sure student-athletes get the care they need. Each team has its own trainer(s) who focuses on preventing injuries and helping athletes recover if they do get hurt. If athletes have questions about their care or what services are available, they can reach out to their team's trainer(s). You can find the Athletic Training facility located on the main floor of Gills Gymnasium.

These resources are dedicated to supporting student-athletes in prioritizing their mental and physical well-being as they navigate their university journey. We're here to empower the athlete to thrive both on and off the field! 

NSU Counseling Center has partnered with TimelyCare to expand student access to mental health care.  NSU students have FREE, 24/7 access to virtual care services with TimelyCare — the virtual health and well-being platform from TimelyMD, designed for college students. Students do not need insurance to access TimelyCare services.  Go to timelycare.com/nsu or download the TimelyCare app and use your student email to access services.   

Students have access to the following services in TimelyCare:

TalkNow: 24/7, on-demand emotional support to talk about anything, including anxiety, relationships, depression, and school-related stressors.

Scheduled Counseling: Choose the day, time, and mental health provider that best works for you.

Health Coaching: Develop healthy lifestyle behaviors, including nutrition, sleep habits, time management, and mindfulness.

Self-Care Content: Visit the “Explore” page within TimelyCare for guided self-care content, including yoga and meditation sessions, as well as group conversations with providers on a variety of health and well-being topics.

Students have access to TimelyCare services 365 days a year. That means you have access during breaks, after-hours, and any time you need support!
