Student-Athlete Academic Support (SAAS)

Student-Athlete Development Program

Student-Athlete Academic Support (SAAS) supports student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic demands. SAAS provides comprehensive academic support services such as advising, tutoring, studying assistance, computing technology, and academic and individual skill development programs. The members of the academic support staff are responsible for monitoring the academic progress of all student-athletes to ensure that they are meeting NCAA progress toward degree requirements and are abiding by university rules and regulations.

All students participating in Intercollegiate Athletics at this institution are expected to make “Satisfactory Progress” towards a degree. While NSU and the NCAA each have specific definitions of minimum progress requirements that must be met in order to compete, students should understand the NSU Athletics Department’s goal for all student-athletes is to graduate.

The Norfolk State University community expects that each student-athlete to embrace their opportunity and reach his or her academic and athletic potential. The mission of SAAS is to provide student-athletes with the support and resources to reach their goals.

Academic Lab

Being a member of a Norfolk State University athletic team is a privilege under which you are required to abide by NCAA, Mid-Eastern Athletic Association (MEAC) and NSU policies and guidelines. As a student-athlete at Norfolk State University, you are required to adhere to the following policies.

  • The NCAA requires that all student-athletes be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours at all times during the fall and spring semesters. It is highly recommended that you enroll in at least 15 credits hours to ensure on-time graduation. Anytime you are below, 12 credits hours, you will be immediately deemed ineligible.
  • Student-athletes are responsible for maintaining their NSU and NCAA academic eligibility.
  • Student-athletes are required to attend all classes and complete all assignments before the specified deadline.
  • Student-athletes are required to submit their travel excuse letters to each professor within one week of receipt. Additionally, student-athletes are expected to proactively coordinate any missed assignments, tests, etc. with their professors in advance.
  • Student-athletes are expected to consult with their assigned athletic academic coordinator regarding all academic matters (i.e. registration, add/drop, emergency absences from class, need for tutoring, declaration of major, etc.)
  • Student-athletes who are assigned to study hall are expected to complete their weekly study hall hour requirement unless other arrangements have been made with their athletic academic coordinator.
  • Student-athletes are expected to attend all mandatory Student-Athlete Development workshops and seminars provided by the department.

Study Hall

- Study hall is required for all freshmen during their 1st year of enrollment. Student-athletes must complete 8 hours of study hall each week. All student-athletes must maintain at least a 2.50 overall GPA to be removed from study hall. Study hall hours can be adjusted at any time at the discretion of the student-athletes’ assigned athletic academic coordinator.

Computer Lab
