Brown Falls Short of 400 Final in Athens

Norfolk, VA

Former NSU All-American sprinter Chris Brown of the Bahamas ran a 45.31 in Saturday’s semifinals of the men’s 400 meters at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, but failed to qualify for the final.

Brown, who won his quarterfinal heat in a time of 45.09 on Friday, finished third in his semifinal heat behind Derrick Brew (45.05) of the United States and Davian Clarke (45.27) of Jamaica. Eight runners total from the three heats advanced to Sunday’s final, and Brown’s time was the 10th-fastest.

NSU All-American and 2000 4x100 relay gold medalist Chandra Sturrup, also of the Bahamas, finished seventh in her second-round heat of the 100 meters on Friday. She finished in 11.46 seconds and failed to advance.

Both runners will still run in relay events: Sturrup in the 4x100 relay, which begins on Thursday, and Brown in the 4x400 relay, which begins Friday.
