Former Norfolk State University track athletes
Chris Brown and
Chandra Sturrup will represent the Bahamas in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Brown is the Bahamian national champion in the 400 meters. He will run the 400 and on the 1,600-meter relay team in Athens. Brown was an All-American in the 400 at NSU. Current NSU track coach
Kenneth Giles formerly served as Brown's personal coach, and Brown is currently coached by former NSU track standout, coach and Olympic gold medalist
Steve Riddick. Brown, the 2001 silver medalist at the 2001 Outdoor World Championships, was on the fourth-place 1,600 relay team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
Sturrup qualified in the 100 meters and will be a member of the 400-meter relay team. She ran a leg on the gold medal-winning 400 relay team in Sydney in 2000. Sturrup has not competed in 2004 due to a stress fracture in her left leg, but she been cleared to compete in the Olympics. She is currently ranked third in the world in the 100, according to www.iaaf.org. At NSU, Sturrup earned All-American honors 16 times from 1992-95, and still holds the NCAA Division II records in the 100 and 200.
Heats for the men’s 400 and women’s 100 begin on Aug. 20. Heats for the women’s 400-meter relay begin on Aug. 26, and the men’s 1,600-meter heats begin on Aug. 27.
Four former NSU track athletes have won gold medals in track: Riddick (400-meter relay, 1976 in Montreal),
Brian Lewis and
Tim Montgomery (400-meter relay, 2000 in Sydney) and Sturrup (400-meter relay, 2000 for the Bahamian team in Sydney).
