RICHMOND, Va. — Vera Chistova scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and host Virginia Commonwealth handed Norfolk State its seventh straight loss, 67-48, on Thursday night at the Siegel Center.
Quanitra Hollingsworth and Krystal Vaughn added 11 points apiece for VCU (6-3), which shot 49 percent from the floor while holding the Spartans (2-7) to 31 percent accuracy.
NSU started out well, getting 3-pointers from Ashley Bowman (Aiken, S.C.) and Jasmine Wilson (Fontana, Calif.) to take a 6-5 lead two and a half minutes in. But VCU responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Michele Cosel, to take a 15-6 lead. VCU would hold a lead of at least seven points the rest of the way.
The Rams led by 18 points at the half (42-24) and by as many as 28 points in the second half. Hollingsworth added nine rebounds, a career-high five blocks and three steals for VCU, which outrebounded the Spartans 42-27 and outscored their guests 15-3 from the free-throw line.
Tiffany Jenkins (Woodbridge, Va.) scored a career-high 14 points off the bench for NSU. She made 4-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. Bowman also scored 14 points, on 6-of-18 shooting, and contributed six assists, four rebounds and three steals.
VCU limited Toia Johnson (Hampton, Va.), NSU’s second-leading scorer, to a season-low two points on 1-of-12 shooting. She was 0-of-10 from 3-point range.
The Spartans, who are 0-1 in MEAC play, resume their conference slate at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Florida A&M.
