RICHMOND, Va. — Norfolk State senior guard Chakowby Hicks (Washington, D.C.) was named the MEAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, as announced Tuesday night at the conference tournament’s tip-off banquet at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
Hicks leads NSU in scoring (14.5 ppg), assists (3.9), steals (3.5), minutes played (35.9), and field goals made and attempted (125 of 305). He is the only player ranked in the MEAC’s top 10 in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals, and led the conference in steals for the third year in a row. He is currently ranked second in Division I in steals.
Hicks had four games with 20 points or more, and led the team with four double-doubles. He becomes the second Spartan, following two-time winner Damian Woolfolk in 1999 and 2000, to earn MEAC Player of the Year honors. He also follows Woolfolk as the second NSU player to become a two-time first-team All-MEAC pick.
Also Tuesday, freshman guard Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) was named to the All-MEAC Rookie Team. He is currently second on the team in scoring (10.4 ppg), and also averages 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He’s hit a team-high 45 3-pointers, connecting on 41 percent. He’s eighth in the conference in 3-pointers made (1.8 per game), and is second among MEAC rookies in scoring, trailing only Rookie of the Year Darryl Proctor of Coppin State.
The NSU women did not earn any All-MEAC honors.
