ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team won both its matches in the back draw of the 2005 MEAC Tennis Championships to capture fifth place last weekend. The men went 1-1 in the back draw and claimed sixth place.

Both NSU teams lost in Thursday's quarterfinals, the women's team falling 4-1 to Bethune-Cookman and the men 4-2 to North Carolina A&T.

The Spartan women (8-11) topped Morgan State 4-0 in their first consolation match, then downed No. 4 Florida A&M 4-2 in the fifth-place match. Against Morgan State, the Spartans won the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles match, then put the match away with straight set wins at Nos. 1 (Fiorella Valdivia), 3 (Flaminia Migone) and 4 (Jennifer Itonyo). Neither of the three victorious NSU women dropped more than two games in any of their sets.

Against FAMU, the Lady Rattlers took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, but NSU stormed back to take wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4. Ewa Kleczek held a 7-5 lead over FAMU's Zama Mkhize before Mkhize retired. Likewise, Migone and Melissa Murray were tied at one set apiece before Murray retired. Itonyo then secured the win for the Spartans with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Samaria Bailey at No. 4 singles.

The NSU men end their season at 8-12. They topped No. 7 Bethune-Cookman 4-0 in their first consolation match. The teams of Milan Juricka and Pavel Suchy at No. 2 and
Stephen Charter and Roman Del Castillo at No. 3 helped NSU take the doubles point. Charter, Del Castillo and Jakub Novak won their singles matches in straight sets to clinch the win.

NSU dropped a tough 4-1 decision to No. 3 Howard in the fifth-place match. NSU's lone win came via captain Milan Juricka at No. 2 singles. Juricka beat Brandon Smith 7-5, 6-4.
