Carter Helps Rams to 1st D-I Win Over NSU

Norfolk, VA

NORFOLK, Va. — Shalonda Carter had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Winston-Salem State players in double figures, and the visiting Rams earned the school’s first-ever Division I women’s basketball win with a 75-64 overtime triumph over Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall.

Despite dressing just six players, the Rams (1-5) hung tough and edged NSU (0-5) 14-3 in the overtime period. Four of the six Rams players scored 12 points or more to lead WSSU to its first win over NSU since 1985-86 and just its third triumph in 23 games all-time against the Spartans.

NSU was led by senior center Nadege Dareus (Miami, Fla.), who had her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) notched her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 boards.

Neither team led by more than seven in regulation. NSU jumped out by seven, 9-2, after a 3-pointer by Toia Johnson three minutes in. The Rams slowly rallied behind the play of Carter, who had 10 points in the first half. WSSU helped limit NSU to 24 percent shooting (8-of-33) in the first half, and the Rams led 28-21 at the intermission.

NSU rallied, scoring seven straight points out of the break while holding WSSU without a field goal for the first 4:30 of the second half. In a see-saw game, Walker scored inside twice to give NSU its largest lead of the second half, 48-43, with 8:45 left in regulation.

But the Rams remained poised, and took the lead back on a layup by Carter with 48 seconds left in the second half. A free throw by Latoya Armstrong gave the Rams a 61-59 lead with 29 seconds left. But Walker had the answer for NSU, grabbing an offensive rebound and making two free throws to tie the game at 61-all with 11.5 seconds left.

After a WSSU turnover, NSU had a chance to win in regulation, but Johnson’s last-second 3-pointer fell short.

The Rams dominated overtime, scoring the first six points and holding NSU without a field goal in the extra session. Lavontay Johnson scored a conventional three-point play, and Richea Harris hit a 3-pointer on the Rams’ next possession to give WSSU a 67-61 lead. The Rams never looked back, making 9-of-13 from the line in OT.

NSU shot just 28 percent for the game and was 0-for-6 in overtime. The Rams only shot 33 percent from the floor, but connected on 76 percent from the foul line (25-of-33) and scored 22 points off 26 Spartan turnovers.

Armstrong added 18 points, Harris 15 and Kadina Baldwin 12 for the Rams. Baldwin added seven assists and seven steals, and Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds.

Tiffany Jenkins (Woodbridge, Va.) added 10 points for the Spartans. Johnson had a season-high six assists, and Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.) had a season-high nine rebounds.

The Spartans return to action Wednesday when they host Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
