Suber, Coppin State Topple NSU Women, 73-44

BALTIMORE, Md.Rashida Suber scored a game-high 22 points and host Coppin State used a smothering defense to defeat Norfolk State 73-44 on Saturday afternoon at the Coppin Center, giving the Lady Eagles their 34th consecutive regular-season MEAC win.

 

Shalamar Oakley had 13 points and Sesalie Johnson 11 for Coppin State (16-6, 11-0 MEAC), which held NSU (4-18, 3-9) to 25 percent shooting and forced 23 Spartan turnovers.

 

The Spartans played the defending MEAC champions close for the first 10 minutes. NSU guard Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.) scored on a layup with 9:46 left in the half to force a 10-all tie.

 

But CSU held the Spartans without a field goal for the next 8:44, outscoring NSU 22-1 in that span. NSU had seven turnovers and missed all 11 of its field goal attempts during the Lady Eagles' run, which included six points apiece from Suber and Johnson. Coppin State led 32-16 at halftime.

 

Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) had 19 points and six rebounds to lead NSU. Toia Johnson (Hampton, Va.) scored 12 points on 4-of-10 3-point shooting and became NSU's all-time career leader in made 3-point field goals. Johnson has 173 career 3-pointers, surpassing Brandy Martin's record of 170. Johnson also had four steals on Saturday.

 

NSU plays at Morgan State on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
