NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State University's 2007 football recruiting class has been ranked sixth among Division I historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), according to rankings released Wednesday by the nationally syndicated sports talk radio show FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW. 

The rankings were selected for FTPBTPR by Matt Dougherty, executive director of Division I Football Championship Subdivision football (FCS, formerly I-AA) at The Sports Network. NSU was ranked third among MEAC schools, behind No. 1 Hampton and No. 3 South Carolina State. 

Tennessee State was ranked second, followed by SCSU, Grambling, Prairie View A&M and NSU. Rounding out the top 10 were Alabama State, North Carolina A&T, Delaware State and Florida A&M. 

This is the second year that FTPBTPR, in conjunction with Dougherty, has ranked HBCU recruiting classes, and the first time that NSU has appeared in the rankings. The Spartans signed 24 high school players to national letters-of-intent last Wednesday, the first day that potential recruits could sign with colleges. NSU signed three players who earned all-state honors in 2006, and four who earned All-Tidewater recognition by The Virginian-Pilot. The Spartans may still sign more prospects in the coming days and weeks.
