SEVERN, Md. — The eighth-seeded Morgan State softball team eliminated No. 2 Norfolk State from the 2007 MEAC Softball Tournament with a 6-3 win in the loser's bracket at the Randazzo Softball Park in Severn, Md.
The Spartans end the season with a 26-25 overall record, tallying the most wins since NSU moved up Division I in the 1997-98 school year.
Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored from third on a wild pitch by Carolynn Howard in the bottom of the first to get NSU on the board.
Morgan State (14-23) answered in the top of the second when Howard scored on a throwing error by second baseman Hitomi Greene (Ulysses, Kan.) to the tie game at 1-1.
The Spartans knotted the game at 2-2 in the third when Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio), who singled to lead off the inning, scored on an error by third baseman Porsche Boddicker. But the Lady Bears added two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
Greene scored NSU's third and final run in the sixth. She led off the inning with a single to left field, advanced to second on an error by catcher Chanel Lee, got to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Morgan State added two runs in the seventh to put the game out of the Spartans' reach.
The Lady Bears, who advance to play Bethune-Cookman at 10 a.m. on Saturday, outhit the Spartans 10-5, but committed five errors compared to NSU's four.
Howard improved to 9-13 on the season with the win after tossing a five-hit, three-run complete game. She allowed one earned run and struck out four. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) fell to 5-6, giving up four runs, three earned, and seven hits in four innings of relief.
Boddicker was 3-for-4 with an RBI and shortstop Ashley Vasquez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored once for Morgan State. Greene had two of the Spartans' five hits and scored one run.
