Payne Named MEAC Rookie of the Week

Raychele Payne was Named MEAC Rookie of the Week after Averaging 22.5 points and 5.5 Rebounds in Two Games

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State freshman guard Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the week, the league announced Monday.

Payne averaged 22.5 points and 4.5 rebounds to help NSU (3-14, 0-7 MEAC) to a 1-1 record last week. She scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Spartans in a 62-61 non-conference win over Winston-Salem State and shot 58-percent from the field (10-of-17) and 87-percent (7-of-8) from beyond the arc in the victory.  Her seven made 3-pointers tied NSU's single game record that was set on Nov. 25, 1989 by Trena Clark.

Against Hampton, Payne led the Spartans in scoring with 18 points and had four rebounds and two assists in her fourth consecutive game scoring in double figures. On the season, she is averaging a team-leading 13.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
