WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Norfolk State freshman guard
Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) was named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Rookie team, as announced Monday night at the conference's award banquet.
Evans currently leads the team in points scored (267), field goals made (90; 3.3 per game), free throws made (65), total rebounds (102) and minutes (25.8). She is averaging 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and has scored in double figures 12 times this season. She posted a career-high 28 points in the regular-season finale against North Carolina A&T. In conference play, she averaging 10.3 points and 3.9 boards per game.
On the season, she is shooting 35.6 percent (90-of-253) from the field and 76.5 percent (65-of-75) from the free-throw line. In 27 games, she has tallied 29 steals, 25 assists and four blocks.
Evans is the third Spartan to be named to the MEAC All-Rookie team. Last year, then freshman
Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) made the rookie team, becoming the first Spartan in four years to earn the honor.
The 11th-seeded Spartans open play in the 2009 MEAC Basketball Tournament against No. 6 Hampton at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
