WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.), Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) and Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) each went 2-for-4 to help the Norfolk State softball team to a 3-2 win over Winston-Salem State on Sunday afternoon at South Park Field.
With the win, the Spartans (22-23) completed the three-game sweep of the Lady Rams (14-26).
Danielle Wright's (Safety Harbor, Fla.) RBI single to right field scored Eure in the top of the first inning to give NSU a 1-0 lead. The Lady Rams countered in the bottom of the inning, picking up a run on Kendall Sutton's infield single.
WSSU took a 2-1 lead in the third on another RBI single by Sutton that scored Bonika Terry. The Lady Rams held that lead until the fifth inning when Sauceda tripled to center field, bringing Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) home safely to tie the game at 2-all.
Barnes drove in the final run of the game in the sixth inning with her single up the middle to seal the win for the Spartans.
Velazquez earned her 17th win of the season after pitching a six-hit, two-run complete game and striking out four. Amber Shore fell to 11-17 with the loss. She allowed 10 hits, three runs (two earned), struck out three and walked two in seven innings.
Terry, Sutton and Shore accounted for all WSSU's hits with two apiece.
The Spartans head to Ormond Beach, Fla. to take part in the 2009 MEAC Softball Tournament. The Spartans are the third seed in the southern division and will play the No. 2 (TBD) seed from the north at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
