Game 2
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Norfolk State softball team pounded out a total of 21 hits en route to a 5-2, 7-3 doubleheader sweep of Winston-Salem State on Saturday afternoon at South Park Field.
NSU (21-23) tallied 10 hits in the first game and 11 in the second to outdo the Lady Rams (14-25) who only managed seven hits in each game.
The Spartans wasted no time in getting on the board in game 1. Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) drove in two runs with a single to center field in the top of the first inning. WSSU answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own to tie things at 2-all.
NSU would go on to score three more runs while not allowing another Lady Ram run.
Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) picked up the win after pitching seven innings and giving up seven hits and two earned runs. Amber Shore allowed 10 hits and five runs in the seven-inning loss.
It was much of the same in game 2. The Spartans attacked first, scoring three runs in the first inning. They held WSSU scoreless until the fourth inning when Elyon Taylor drove in a run. The Spartans got four more along the way to seal the win.
Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif.) earned her fourth win of the season after pitching four innings where she gave up four hits and one earned run. Shore took her second loss of the day after an 11-hit, seven-run outing.
On the day, Wright went 3-for-8 with a double, triple and six RBI. Eight other Spartans had at least one hit.
The teams conclude the three-game series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
