RICHMOND, Va. – Blake Hauser pitched six shutout innings and Joey Cujas went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead host VCU to a 9-1 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday evening at The Diamond.
Hauser (2-3) allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out seven for the Rams (18-25). VCU's offense, meanwhile, outhit the Spartans (17-25), 15-4.
VCU scored six times in the first two innings off NSU starter
Chase Kyriacou (0-2). Cujas hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first, then VCU erupted for five runs in the second. Landon Prentiss hit a two-run single and Paul Nice drove in another with a single in the second.
John Lenherr stretched the lead to 7-0 with a run-scoring single in the fourth. Cujas (RBI single) and Lenherr (sacrifice fly) capped VCU's scoring with RBI in the fifth.
The Spartans' lone run came via an RBI groundout by
Chris Joyce in the eighth.
Kyriacou took the loss by allowing six hits and six earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Ryan Montgomery had two of the Spartans' four hits on the evening.
Nice, Lenherr and Taylor Perkins each added two hits for VCU.
The Spartans are back in action this Saturday and Sunday in their final MEAC series of the season, a three-game set at Florida A&M.
