NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman outfielder
Haley Ward was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season as the conference office announced its weekly softball honors on Monday afternoon.
Ward hit 5-for-9 as the Spartans took two of three games from Delaware State last Friday and Saturday to move into a tie for first place in the MEAC Northern Division. The Spartans stand 9-3 in conference play, tied with Delaware State at the top of the standings, as well as 20-20 overall.
Ward scored one run and added one double and two RBI to help the Spartans sweep a doubleheader from the Hornets, 3-1, 6-1, on Friday in Dover, Del. The Hornets shut out NSU on Saturday to prevent the sweep.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native leads the team with a .432 average. She ranked 33rd in the nation in batting average heading into last week, including fourth among all freshmen. She also leads the team with 27 runs, 48 hits, 10 doubles, 18 RBI, a .595 slugging percentage and a .492 on-base percentage.
Ward was also named Rookie of the Week on April 2.
NSU will continue conference play Wednesday with a doubleheader against Howard at 3 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
