Day, Markel Earn All-MEAC Baseball Honors

All-MEAC Teams

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State baseball players Cameron Day and Zach Markel were named to the All-MEAC second team, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Day, a junior outfielder, earned all-conference honors for the second straight season. Day batted .311 during the regular season with 11 doubles, one triple, two homers and 28 runs batted in. He was second among Spartan regulars in both batting and RBI, and led in doubles. Day was a preseason All-MEAC selection prior to the season, and was a first-team all-conference performer as a sophomore in 2010.

Markel, a junior first baseman, led NSU's regulars with a .321 average and 31 runs batted in. He doubled 10 times and tied Day for the team-lead in homers. Markel, a first-year Spartan who transferred from Potomac State College (W.Va.) last fall, was named MEAC Player of the Week once during the season.

North Carolina A&T first baseman Kelvin Freeman was named the MEAC Player of the Year. Savannah State swept the other top awards, with SSU coach Carlton Hardy being tabbed Coach of the Year, pitcher Kyle McGowin taking Pitcher of the Year honors, and outfield Mendez Elder taking Rookie of the Year accolades.
