NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State women's basketball forward
Marian Brooks has accepted the Victory Scholarship through the Sport Changes Life Foundation (SCL) to study in Ireland for the 2013-14 academic year.
Brooks will spend the school year studying business, with a concentration in sports, at the University of Limerick located in Limerick, Ireland. While there, she will also coach basketball and coordinate a reading program for local youth.
“It is really an unbelievable feeling to earn this scholarship, none of which could have happened without the help and support of my family, my coaches and the athletic faculty and staff,” said Brooks. “I am truly honored and grateful because I will be able to study abroad and help at-risk youth in the local community through sports and education.”
Having graduated in the spring with a journalism degree, Brooks was a four-year letterwinner on the Spartan basketball team. Her senior season in 2012-13 was cut short after six games due to injury. Nevertheless, she finished her playing career with 458 points and 373 rebounds in 90 games in a little over three years.
Brooks will depart from the United States in August.
