NORFOLK, Va.
– Brett Wallace hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning and his Norfolk Tides teammates made that stand up for a 1-0 win over Norfolk State in the teams' annual exhibition game before 6,188 fans Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

The Tides out-hit NSU 3-1 in the seven-inning affair, which last just over two hours.

Wallace's two-out single knocked in Jemile Weeks for the game's only run. Weeks led off the game by drawing a walk.

After that RBI hit, though, the Spartan pitchers acquitted themselves well against their Triple-A minor league opposition. NSU used eight pitchers in the game who combined to record five strikeouts and allow just three singles to Tides players.

NSU got its one and only hit in the top of the seventh as backup outfielder Leroy Parker beat out an infield hit to shortstop. That hit came with two outs and followed a walk to Noah Johnson. Parker's hit put runners on first and second bases, but they were stranded there as Killian Strenn popped out to end NSU's best scoring chance.

Wallace, David Adams and Quintin Berry had the Tides' trio of hits.

After the Tides scored a run off NSU starter Justin Bhatti in the first, the Spartans got scoreless pitching efforts from Cooper Jones, Corey Haynes, Jonathan Mauricio, Jay Dee Johnson, Jeff Di Fulgo, Josh Vales and Troy Applin. Jones and Vales both fanned a pair of Tide hitters in their one inning of work each, while Mauricio retired both hitters he faced, one by strikeout.

The Spartan defense also played well. NSU did not commit an error, turned a pair of double plays and got a nice sliding catch from left fielder Tyon Ore to rob the Tides of a hit. Chase Kyriacou also had an outfield assist, cutting down Chris Marrero at third base at the tail end of Wallace's hit in the first inning.

The exhibition, which also serves as a fundraiser for the NSU baseball program, has now drawn 31,379 fans in the four years it has been played. The crowd Tuesday included several thousand area youth as part of the Norfolk Public Schools day promotion and partnership between the city and the NSU baseball program.
