McNair Named MEAC Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Kayla McNair of the Norfolk State softball team was named the MEAC Player of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced, after leading the Spartans to a 4-0 record over the weekend.

McNair hit 5-for-9 with four runs, two home runs, six RBI and five walks in those four games, leading NSU to a three-game series sweep of Morgan State as well as a victory over Howard on Friday.

She hit 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI in a 9-1 win over Morgan State on Saturday, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth to end the game on the eight-run rule. McNair, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., followed that up with a 1-for-2 day with one run and three RBI on Sunday in an 8-1 victory, blasting a three-run homer to extend NSU's lead in the sixth inning.

On the season, McNair is hitting .410 with 18 runs, 32 hits, four doubles, seven home runs, 27 RBI and 15 walks while slugging .731. She ranks third in the MEAC in hitting as well as second in slugging and on-base percentage (.515), fourth in RBI and home runs and fifth in total bases (57).

She is hitting .579 (22-for-38) in her last 12 games.

It marks the third weekly award for McNair, who has twice been named the MEAC Rookie of the Week this season as well.

NSU will play a key MEAC series at Delaware State this weekend, starting with two games on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
