NORFOLK, Va. –
Vini Da Silva won four matches over three days en route to capturing the Silver Singles draw championship at the Monarch Invitational, which ran Friday through Sunday at Old Dominion's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The sophomore from Aracaju, Brazil came from behind in the championship match, defeating William & Mary's Michael Chen in three sets. Da Silva dropped the first set 6-3 before storming back 7-5, 6-1.
Da Silva required a three-set comeback in the semifinals as well – pulling past second-seeded Louis Newman of William & Mary 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. He put his first two opponents away easily, cruising into the semis with victories of 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-3.
Andres Alcaraz defeated Charlotte's Collin Thomson in straight sets – 6-2, 6-2 – in his opening match in the Navy Singles draw before falling in three sets to Christian Cargill of the Tribe. Alcaraz staked claim to an early lead, taking the first set 6-4, but the sophomore could not punch his ticket to the semifinals – falling 6-2, 7-5 in the final two sets.
The doubles pairing of Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel won one match over the weekend, taking their opening-round match over Tate Steinour and Alvaro Arce of James Madison, 8-3. The duo then fell to William & Mary's Chen and Tristan Bautil, 8-4.
Dan Dumitruscu was forced to retire from his opening match in the Navy singles. The junior was trailing 6-3, 4-2 when the match ended.
August Carrizo and Guevel were both eliminated after their first two matches in the Silver Singles draw.
The doubles pairing of Alcaraz and Dumitruscu dropped their opening match 8-6 before withdrawing from their first contest in the consolation bracket.
Norfolk State men's and women's tennis returns to action on October 15 for the 757 Doubles Tournament at the NSU Tennis Complex.
