Results

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.
– Norfolk State women's tennis senior Dajana Cvjetkovic won two matches without dropping a set to reach the championship match at the Virginia Beach Clay Court Championship held this past weekend at the Cape Henry Racket Club. However, heavy rains on Sunday prevented the championship match from being contested, and Cvjetkovic was named co-champion.

After receiving an opening-round bye Cvjetkovic defeated Spartan teammate Aranza Mellet 4-2, 4-2 to advance to the semifinals.

Once in the semifinals, the Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina native dispatched Kia Turner 4-2, 5-3 to set up a meeting with Hampton's Miriam Mitaishvili in the finals.

Paula Fortuno also reached the semifinals for the Spartans. She defeated Anastasiia Romanova of Hampton 4-1, 4-2 in the opening round. Fortuno then defeated another Pirate, Haley Mullins, 4-2, 4-1 to advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Fortuno fell to Mitaishvili 4-0, 4-1.

Mellet and Bruna Goncalves each won their opening match in the singles draw before bowing out in the next round. Mellet defeated Hampton's Ciara Walker 5-4, 4-0 before falling to Cvjetkovic, and Goncalves was eliminated by Mitaishvili after a 4-1, 4-0 victory in the first round.

Ana Popovic dropped her first match to Turner 2-4, 4-2, 2-0 before falling 6-1 in a single-set consolation match.

In Friday's doubles play, Cvjetkovic and Fortuno received a bye into the semifinals, where they defeated a tandem featuring Mullins in three sets. Cvjetkovic and Fortuno dropped the first set 2-4 before storming back with a 5-4 victory in the second set and a 4-2 win in the tiebreaker.

In the finals, Cvjetkovic and Fortuno lost in straight sets to Mitaishvili and Cherise Slocombe of Hampton, 4-0, 4-2.

Goncalves and Popovic lost their opener to Romanova and Walker 4-1, 4-0 before picking up a 4-2, 4-2 victory in a consolation match over a pairing that included Mellet.

The Spartans conclude the fall portion of their schedule with the 757 Doubles Tournament on Nov. 11 in Virginia Beach, Va.
