ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State men's tennis closed out a successful stay in the Sunshine State with a 5-0 blanking of NCAA Division-II's John Carroll on Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The Spartans (4-2) won two of three in doubles play to take a 1-0 lead.
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel started the match off with a 6-1 victory over Doug Moore and Adi Jha in the third-seeded match.
JCU (2-6) answered with a 6-4 win by Tyler Cole and Andrew Triner in the No. 2-seeded flight.
The pairing of
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu won the doubles point for NSU with a 7-5 victory over Dillon O'Brien and Gustavo Garcia in the top-seeded flight.
The Spartans did not drop a set in singles competition.
Agustin Carrizo and Guevel both won 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth- and sixth-seeded flights, respectively.
Flavian Fernandez clinched the match for Norfolk State with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Scott Adsit in the fourth-seeded match.
Alcaraz gave the Spartans their final point of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the top-seeded flight.
Da Silva and Dumitrascu led late in the second sets of their uncompleted matches. Da Silva was ahead of Cole 6-2, 5-3 in the second-seeded flight, and Dumitrascu led 6-2, 4-1 in the No. 3-seeded flight.
The Spartans now take a rest before hosting UC Riverside on March 28 at 3 p.m.
