NSU Loses Twice in Weekend Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State women's tennis began its extended stay in Orlando, Florida with two-straight loses at the USTA National Campus. The Spartans (0-2) dropped their opener to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday before losing to Hampton on Sunday.

The Mountaineers (2-7) swept doubles play to take an early 1-0 advantage. Alexa Quintanilla and Hannah Davis took the top-seeded flight over Paula Fortuno and Dajana Cvjetkovic, 6-2. Megan Smith and Sruthi Kamprath won 6-4 against Ana Popovic and Nena Greenhouse in the second-seeded match. Emma Blake and Megan Gamble completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory over Tyrika Lee and Makayla Peterson.
 
NSU's comeback effort fell just short in singles competition. In the first-seeded flight, Cvjetkovic won in a three-set marathon. Cvjetkovic and Quintanilla split the first two sets 6-4, 1-6 before Cvjetkovic took the tiebreaking set 10-8.
 
Fortuno defeated Davis 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 2-seeded match. Kamprath won in the No. 3-seeded flight over Popovic 6-2, 6-2.
 
Goncalves won in the fourth-seeded match, defeating Gamble 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5).
 
MSM took the No. 5 and No. 6-seeded flights. Smith downed Lee 6-0, 6-0. Blake also swept Greenhouse 6-0, 6-0.

Cvjetkovic went the distance again in singles play for NSU's lone point of the match.
 
The Lady Pirates (1-0) swept all three doubles matches to lead 1-0. Haley Mullins and Ana Romanova started the match with a 6-0 win over Lee and Peterson in the third-seeded flight. Kiah Turner and Yulia Kapitanova then defeated Popovic and Goncalves, 6-2, to secure the doubles point. Mariam Mitaishvili and Cherise Slocombe finished off the sweep with a 6-3 result over Cvjetkovic and Fortuno.
 
HU won the first three singles matches to wrap up the victory. Mullins swept Lee 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5-seeded flight before Slocombe downed Popovic, 6-0, 6-0, in the third-seeded match.
 
Kapitanova won the match for the Lady Pirates with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Goncalves in the fourth-seeded flight.
 
In the No. 2-seeded match, Turner defeated Fortuno, 6-2, 6-3.
 
Cvjetkovic gave the Spartans their only point of the evening with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Mitaishvili in the top-seeded flight.
 
Romanova wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Greenhouse.
 
The Spartans resume action in Florida against Niagara on Tuesday before facing Radford the following day.
